Electronic Waste Recycling-Is waste really waste?
There is no such thing as electronic ‘waste’! Yes, you read that right. Then why do people keep talking about Electronic waste and electronic waste recycling, and what is it which needs to be recycled / reused / redeployed? Well, anything which is recyclable, reusable & re-deployable material is not waste but ‘Resource’.
According to the EPA, recycling just 1 million cell phones can recover about 24kgs of gold, 250kgs of silver, 9kgs of palladium and more than 9000kgs of copper. If we recycled a million laptops, it would save the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 homes in a year. Electronic equipments are no longer a signature statement of a select few, these are integral part of everyone’s lives.
India is home of a mammoth magnitude of e-waste arising mainly from the abandoned, obsolete or broken electrical or electronic devices and is expected to grow to 15 million MT by 2020 from 3.2 million MT in 2015 consisting of monetary value of recoveries from e-waste to the tune of USD 3 billion (INR 20,000 Crores) and may touch to USD 15 billion (INR 100,000 crore) by 2020. This issue of e-waste has triggered a need for a sound e-waste management in the country. More than the generation of e-waste, the most serious problem is its collection, handling and processing. Mostly resorted to conventional modes of collection by Kabadies or scrap collectors or rag pickers; there is a need to spread awareness regarding organized way of electronic waste recycling.
Ecoreco is the pioneer of organized Electronic waste recycling in India. Ecoreco Group of Companies have built a model under which, our team of experts skill up the unorganized waste workers as per the norms of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and provide them entrepreneurship opportunities, sets up collection bins & collection centers and reverse logistic network to facilitate reverse movement of used & discarded material to organized waste recycling facilities. By investing heavily in the latest technology, we ensure that maximum value can be extracted from the collected E-waste and nothing goes to landfill.
Now the time has come to integrate the scientific & domain knowledge to achieve the required results without impacting the health, safety & environment and at the same time save the natural resources to maintain ecological equilibrium. There is also an urgent need to focus on skill development in the waste management sector. Until and unless the informal waste workers are integrated with the formal chain of recycling the desired results could not be achieved.
Organized electronic waste recycling will provide the solution to the problem of E-waste which is impacting the lives of the waste managers and harming the environment to the extent that we are not ready to accept.
